Oracles from the Living Tarot

This promises to be a lovely adventure complete with disco divas, obscure geeky refernces, and a whole lotta oracular pleasure!

Hmmm, my interpretation is that we're all going to hell in a handbasket, but just for a little while until we can all get bigger in our souls and less interested in ourselves. Big shake-ups, self-centeredness, a whole lot of endless processing and machination that ultimately doesn't go anywhere until at least one, if not all, parties involved consciously gives up any and all attachments to particular outcome. this is not a grim reaper reading, but it does kind of suck.

We know her better as the Brat. Brattiness comes from not getting enough attention. You must pay attention to the Page of Wands.
a). Isn't she lovely? b). I said--- Isn't she lovely?
d). There's something she is trying to tell you and you didn't pay attention to what she wants you to do, and you just gave her a cursory pat on the head. Like Veruka Salt, bad attention will do in a pinch. She can be bribed, but then the stakes go up.

What she is trying to get from you is your complete devotion. You are filled w/ love but only give out meager allotments of it. Give all your love. She brings to your attention that something is missing, someone was left out of the equation, "Listen to ME! …I want it NOW!!!"

Poor Veruka, down the garbage chute, spoiled w/ bribes and inattention. We can do better (we are more like Charlie than that nasty old man Wonka --- Veruka is his name for her. Her real name is Veronica.)

What of our own Brat? What are we silencing w/ treats that deserves our unconditional love?

According to The Dictionary of the Tarot by Bill Butler, the Knight of Wands denotes travel, possible disruptions to the home. Crowley describes him as impulsive. The traditional meaning also of a dark young man. He is associated w/ Leo. [Possibly suntanned?] In the Haindl deck he is portrayed as Krishna. (A very dark young man, indeed!) I call him the Lover. As a Seeker, he is the one who makes the first move. The King of Wands says "This is what needs to be done." The Queen wants you to do what she wants. The Knight goes out and does it. (The Page will bring to your attention things left undone.)

The Trinity of Gods --- Creator, Sustainer, and Destroyer --- are also suggested. Kings create, or begin. Queens sustain and bring to fruition. The Knight, as a Warrior, has in him an aspect of destruction. The Knight of Wands afflicted is someone you want to keep at a distance. As a frequent visitor to my friends' readings, I have learned that the Knight of Wands comes on strong, but then his ardour cools quickly. Unlike the Knight of Cups (associated w/ Scorpio) who, when he leaves you, is gone for good, the Knight of Wands can turn into a friend.

I have persistently referred to Knights as him, partly from a tendency I have had to read for straight women and their romantic misadventures, partly as part of the traditional attributions. Some decks call Knights Sons. Rachel Pollack's Shining Tribe Tarot calls them Seekers. There are gender differences between how different people manifest the Court cards, but perhaps I am not wise enough to tease them all out. Any thoughts on that account?

The Court cards present difficulties for many readers. Are they specific people for the querent? An aspect of themselves that other people are a projection of? Do they represent potential or actual? Some people don't know what to make of the court cards that fall in a reading. I have noticed a dropping off of posts since we started on the Court cards. Could this difficulty be why? How do I relate a court card to myself when they specifically refer to personality traits I don't identify with? I call the Queen of Wands the Bitch. I tell my clients how to embrace that, what good that quality serves. But I didn't post that teaching (tho it's not too late --- I want to encourage people to go back and add to cards we have already covered.) I have a lot of other things keeping me from this forum, and I assume everyone else has their pressing commitments. I hope that explains the falling off of posts. Because there are 13 court cards yet to go, and I hate to think that they will drive people away.

The Seeker of Deeds often needs to think long before acting, and sort out all feelings. [4 of cups]. When everything finally clicks into place, arises [VIII Strength] and engages in the struggle to get what wants [5 of wands]. Success [6 of wands] leads to an appreciation of what has [Queen of Pentacles]. This leads to a willingness to take further risks [7 of wands]. Esoteric teachings have it that the Human drama began in the Age of Leo. Let's call on the Leo qualities of Heart and not falter at the beginning.

The Queens are portrayed as seated in the RWS and Thoth decks to denote their receptive nature. Queen of Wands is receptive to activity. You had better be doing what she wants you to do--- they don't call her the Bitch for nothing. Her challenge is to get people to want to give her what she wants, and the only way she can do that is to learn how to communicate her needs. The allies she must Nurture are the Page of Swords, the go-between, and the Queen of Swords who has known sorrow. The Queen of Pentacles can teach her to sit still and wait. The Queen of Cups will be her understanding friend. "Us gals have to stick together."

How can the Queen of Wands learn the secret of getting what she wants? The answer has to do w/ graciousness. And when she is denied, oh, watch out! The Minor cards she rules are the Party [7 cups], Haste [8 wands], and The Hard Dance (dancing as hard as you can) [9 wands]. At the Party she is the Charming Hostess, working her ass off to make sure everyone is having a good time. She works so hard at it she hardly has time to have a good time herself. Does she resent the Beautifull Girl [Q of P] to whom everyone pays court? The Spy [P of S] is in the corner trading snarky remarks w/ a cute guy who's too shy to kiss her [Kn of C, R]. The Party Girl is out of control [Q of P, R] and is too drunk already, making out w/ a guy who's all wrong for her [Kn of W, R]. Another party and everyone is playing their rôles. George [Kg of W] is in the kitchen holding court over a pot of gumbo. Did everyone get enough? When the time is right he will bring out the good stuff, in the mean time let everyone get drunk--- has the keg floated yet?

Maybe other's of y'all have another take on the Queen of Wands. I'm anxious to hear them.

In addition to our cards of the week study, Johanna suggested that we also use this space to analyze the Wheel of the Year from the LT. So, Beltane is upcoming, and this is our reading according to dress rehearsal* Perf.1* Perf.2:

Welcome to the Court of the Southland!

The King of Wands - a passionate, ardent, forceful, spontaneous, demanding, and creative energetic being. Someone who lights the way with the energy of fire- a natural leader who inspires. The power of the King of Wands nearly always results in explosive experiences, for good or evil. Gene Rodenberry directed his Leonine energy toward sparking a movement in the sci-fi/fantasy community that forever altered our ideas about outward expansion. "Beam me up, Scotty" is the battle cry of every poor sap who is feeling trapped in the doldrums of earthly existence. David Koresh decided to channel HIS Leonine energy in another way altogether. He and his followers literally went down in flames. Both of them are considered "cult leaders" in completely different ways. But there is a cord than connects them: their ability to motivate others.

So, how about a turn around the trumps with this fiery fella?

Buildings don't have this anymore- workers used to create a nice, well-carved cornerstone that said who built the building, what union they worked for, when it went up. I am sad about this practice dying, because it speaks to more than one problem in our society: 1) a lack of sense in foundation, and 2) a lack of workers' pride.

Abstract elemental forces coalesce into a concrete thing--- that little bit of Magick become a seed of great things manifest now. How does this Magick manifest for you?

Swords represent mental energy, i.e., thoughts. Thought is the activity of Mind. Mind is said to be the surface of Heart, and Heart the depths of Mind. From the essence of Heart --- the Ace of Cups --- arises the play of light and shadows that is perception. To see is to experience the surface of what feelings know. We know how this thinking business ends, in Ruin, when all thought ends and amidst the desolation a seed is found, the Ace of Pentacles. But we don't follow thought to its logical end, but only glance once, a shining gleam. Mind is said to arise on the breath, Air, one slow easy breath in and hold it w/out strain, hu… relax into clarity. The Ace of Swords is focus and clarity.

Let's take the Ace of Cups around the circle of the Trumps --- it is a loving Cup, it is Refreshment, it is oneness w/ the Flow.
* * *
So, this is Ace of Cups week- the beginning of a heart's journey. A new way of loving that starts within and slowly works its way out. This card, to my thinking, very much relates to the Lovers monologue from our recent OLT. Panthera, any thoughts?

Also, how does YOUR card from OLT relate to this one? Here's my idea:

The Empress with the Ace of Wands-
In order for abundance to manifest, there has to be fertility. In order for fertility to manifest, there must be attraction. In order for attraction to manifest, YOU much believe yourself to be both attract_ive_ and attract_ed_. The Empress is Demeter, who sows the seeds and creates the harvest. The Ace of Cups is Aphrodite, who spurs things along. When both of them are happy and productive, the Earth is a fertile, bountiful, naturally sexy place full of love and affirmation. When either of them is unhappy, she becomes bitter, small-minded, and clamps down on growth. A flower cannot bloom if it is held in a clenched fist. These cards together say, "love freely and know that you reap what you sow."
* * *
The idea I have is to have each of the Trumps interact w/ the Ace of Wands. I'll set up a thing here and we can all add to it. I'm setting each Trump as a comment on this entry. Ember's story fits in so well w/ my own thought, that one might think i was inspired by her. That is the glory of the Tarot, that it can hold all our stories. Some of my entries are meant to comment on the characters created for the OLT, others are more abstract. I hope this sparks our discussion.

So, today my card of the day was the Tower. The card of this week in our study is Ace of Wands. This afternoon, there was a big earthquake in East Oakland- it rattled the clinic I was in. The fire at the core of the Earth created a movement that shook buildings!

Note for future reference: The Tower and the Ace of Wands together have Earthquake energy. Good to know for relationship readings as well as potential employer/employee readings, project/outcome readings- pretty much any reading with two dominant energies involved.

I think using augury (marking natural phenomena) along with the cards (divination) is enlightening. Anyone else interested in weather or other environmental phenomena as part of the divinatory process? My tarot teacher used to do a card of the day every day. On 9/11/01 she drew the Tower. She decided she didn't like it and so she shuffled it back in and drew again: The Tower. An hour later we were sitting together clutched in our office unable to reach any of our friends who were in there as the planes hit- they were all safe, thanks be. She did the Chinese elemental astrology for that day and the two elements of the day were Fire and Metal. From then on, I have tried to observe these things more closely.

Ace of Wands ---
energy, strength, enterprise, principle, beginning
root of the power of fire
creativity, inspiration or intuition

Beginning of enterprises, and as Jessica points out, not a lot of sustain. there is no way i am going to enter the entire entry for each card into this forum. But there are many books and some of us have no books. I have Bill Butler's Dictionary of the Tarot beside me and it has brief precis of the ideas and imagery of many of the major decks and thinkers as of the 70s when this book was published (so it includes the Aquarian and New Tarot). As we go thru this i will enter some things from books just because that is how my process is furthered --- i'm a book kind of person.

from the Book of Thoth ---
[The Ace of Wands] is the primordial Energy of the Divine manifesting in Matter, at so early a stage that it is not yet definitely formulated as Will.

That seems to be saying in Crowley's way what i quote Jessica as saying. That the outburst of energy is unbounded. Like sparks, it needs to be contained in something (tinder is the metaphor) that will allow it to grow. Like starting a fire, as they taught in Boy Scouts, you need small easily burning things contained in a structure that will protect the vulnerable start, that will catch and build. We constructed small tee-pee shapes of increasing size. I hope i am not stretching this metaphor too much, but a bonfire is the basic image i use for Wands.

"In the beginning there was a fire and we were all there."
* * *
Ace of Wands, first day of Aries, first day of Spring, dawn of a new season, close of the play, darkness recedes, changing to the green. I often call the Ace of Wands the divine match under the divine ass. In my mythic deck, it was Zeus- the igniter of passions, the raw force behind process, the urge to get a project going. It does not seem to me to be a big card on follow-through, however. Instead, it is the confidence, the impetus, the passion, the cojones, the formless chaotic impulse from which something can be built.
It is the moment the lightning bolt hit the protoplasm, or the moment of the Big Bang, or the moment 'God' said "Let there be light" or the moment a baby is conceived or the moment in which we make an audacious choice from which we can not retreat.
